David: PS3 = $599
I'm an enthusiastic gamer, to say the least, but...

It's a video game console!

I now predict the rise of HD-DVD. The PS3 was Sony's trojan horse into the market, and, at this price, they blu it.

Today's the day we get juicy Wii details! Can't wait.

The cheapest Blu Ray DVD players I have seen are going to run $700 to a Thou, so $599 seems a good deal for the PS3. Besides, GTA 4 is going to Rock.

I don't want a movie player. If I want a movie player, I'll buy a movie player. I want a game console. Since the machine ships with a minimum 20GB HD (for $500 crippled PS3), the amount of data available on the media disc really shouldn't matter. It's just Sony forcing unwanted technology upon gamers.

As for GTA 4, well, I guess I'm tired of Rockstar's brand of clunky gameplay/bad controls. While the "go anywhere/do anything" aspect of GTA was fun at first, it's available in too many games to count anymore.

The only reason I could see myself buying one is for Final Fantasy and Metal Gear. Even then, are two games really worth $720+? Probably not for me.

I always find it weird when people refer to GTA gameplay and control as clunky. Resident Evil is clunky. Every Mario Game made since the N64 is clunky. In comparison, GTA is pretty damn smooth.

The Blu Ray DVD capabilities are merely gravy. Hell, if you can get a solid console (for about the cost that other new consoles cost these days) AND it plays the latest generation of DVDs to boot, then that is a good deal. Especially when it costs less than a machine that just plays those DVDs.

But that's not really the point. The point is, it's too late for Nintendo. It was too late as soon as the released the N64. It has been a decaying orbit ever since.

Honestly, I don't quite understand the brand loyalty people of a certain age seem to have to Nintendo. I guess I've just lived through too many consoles:

Atari 2600
Atari 7200
Atari Jaguar
NeoGeo
NES
Super NES
N64
GameCube
Sega Genesis
(plus 32x)
Sega CD
Sega Saturn
Sega Dreamcast
Playstation
Playstation 2
XBox
Xbox 360

Then the handhelds:

Gameboy
Virtual Boy
Game Boy Advance
Game Boy Advance SP
Nintendo DS
PSP

At this point I don't care who is on top. But, honestly, it is going to be Sony or Microsoft. Those are the console makers delivering what most people want.

Resident Evil controls like a tank. The immersion level is what drove that game. The endless sequels grew repetitive, and the willingness to put up with the crappy control faded for me. RE4 was much improved, though.

For me, it's not about brand loyalty, it's about return on investment. I've spent and spend more time playing my GameCube then I do playing my PS2. Even with it's smaller catalog, the titles that I tend to purchase seem to have a longer lasting "fun" factor for me.

In the case of GTA:SA, I will admit, it held me in it's grasp for 2 weeks. After that, I had completed every mission in the game. At that point, it was just GTA III/GTA:VC with a new map and a black guy. Oh, and I could fly a plane and buy clothes. In short, it had become a game that I already had two copies of on my shelf. This is why I don't hold out much hope for the sequel.

Just my opinion though. I'm more of a twitch gamer who wants to get pissed off (not by cheap deaths) at my game for being too hard a couple of times an hour. I'm less impressed by graphics.

I tend to be impressed by graphics. I also like large games (complex story lines and massive environments). The Sony Consoles have given me that in spades.

I'll admit that I didn't spend much time with the Game Cube. The N64 killed nintendo for me. I just couldn't forgive them for that. I might have gotten more interested in the GC if it had proprietary games that I really wanted. I was done with Zelda 15 years ago and the Mario games got sort of sucky.

You were done with Zelda too early.
Nathan Tyree - (Overwhelmed by existential angst)
Really? I don't know, I just lost interest.
