David: I Rant
I purchased a digital camcorder at Best Buy yesterday. I'm not sure that I really needed/wanted one, but it's in the soon-to-be dad's handbook. An open letter to Best Buy about my shopping experience is up over at my layout challenged site.

I ended up with a 20GB JVC HDD camcorder, which means no tapes. I haven't had much time to shoot with it yet, but it looks like I'm going to have to download a few add-ons for the Mac to be able to recoginize the video. It's MPEG-2 and QT only deals in MPEG-4. The app that was bundled with the camera is PPC only which means that it's slooooooooow on my Intel Mac. However, these difficulties are worth it for the moment since I won't have to deal with DV tape, a format that I can convert the video files to, if necessary.

So, wait... will it work on something other than PC?

It works with the software provided, Mac OSX just isn't equipped to deal with the .MOD video (a semi-proprietary MPEG-2 format) out of the box. However, and Quicktime plug-in and one free Streamclip download later and I'm able to convert them to any format I like.

So now I think it's the shit.

Yeah, BBY blows. Its sad how agressive their sales tactics are for them being non comissioned.

I hate that job.

Congrats on your new camera though!
