David: Giddy With Anticipation
The Wii launch is now a mere 83 hours away, at least here it is. You east coasters have an hour more to procure one.

I will be breaking my self imposed Wal-Mart ban in the interests of having one of these wonderful items at the zero hour. I will then remain awake for the next 24 hours.

Oh, and that other console launches on Friday, though its rarity and expense, not to mention no particular reason to own it (yet) preclude the idea of buying one.

I noticed this morning that people are already in line to buy the PS3. Not seeing that in relation to the Wii

That's because lining up is not necessary for the Wii.

There will be about 150,000 PS3 to go around the country on Friday. Compare that to almost 1.2 million Wii units on Sunday.

Not to mention the PS3 doesn't really seem to have any "killer apps" at the moment. I guess it's a really expensive way to secure a blu-ray copy of Talladega Nights, though.

Blu Ray is one of the biggest reasons to covet the PS3
the fact that it will have better graphics capabilities than the Wii is another.

I guess. Personally, I just don't see the same dramatic leap in graphics as there was from PS to PS2. I see a difference, just not a $600 difference. Graphics impress me, but I don't buy games on how they look, but how they play. If a game is on multiple consoles that I own, I buy the version for the graphically superior one (which is the Gamecube in my home, as I don't own an Xbox). Maybe when availability is up, prices are down, and the library is filled out with games I want, I'll reconsider.

Same with Blu-Ray. If I had a 1080p HD television, and many of the movies I had now were available in the Blu-Ray format, I might care, but I don't and they're not. Not to mention the competing technology war. I predict PS3 will be about as great a Blu-Ray player as PS2 was a DVD player, which is to say a "not so good one".

As it is, the Wii has something to offer that, in my opinion, is superior to "better graphics capabilities"; innovation. It's also offering this at a reasonable price point, and with an extensive library of interesting titles to choose from.

I played the PS3 today and was not impressed. Graphically, it had a great polygon count, but the frame rate dropped (!?) during one of the scenes with a lot of models on the screen. Gameplay wise it wasn't that impressive either. I played some motosport game and it was "meh" to say the least.

Here's hoping that the people waiting to spend $500+ will get some good titles before year's end.

As for a Wii, I don't have the cash to get one just yet.

Anyone who's not aware: EB Games has a demo Wii setup now. You have to leave ID with the cashier as collateral since otherwise you could just walk off with the controller, but you can play Excite Truck. While I was playing it last week, people kept coming up and looking, asking questions and stuff. I swear, I felt like I was working for the place with all people I talked to (okay, now I'm exaggerating). Still, if you haven't already, try it out. Fun times.

Our town does not have demo units yet and probably won't until next week. Goes to show you how corporations prioritize.
