David: The Unpopular Opinion
You know what? I think everyone needs to shut the fuck up and leave Don Imus alone.

So the guy said something that you don't agree with. So maybe it was offensive. So what? We can't say offensive things on the radio anymore?

If he had called Hugh Hefner's girlfiends a trio of pale-faced whores would we be reading news stories about how he's been suspended for two weeks? Would the leaders of the "white community" be outraged?

What's that you say? The fact that Don Imus is white gives him the right to degrade white people but denies him the right to degrade other races?

Okay then. What if Ned Holness (AKA "Carlos Mencia") had made a remark against "Hef's Hos"?

I'm not arguing that Imus's comment was in good taste. It wasn't. I'm just stating that the media and Al Sharpton are making much ado about nothing. I mean, Christ, it's a comedy show! He wasn't reporting the fucking news! He didn't go on air and say, "You know what America? The women's basketball team at Rutgers consists of a lot of nappy-headed hos. Just thought you should know."

Trust me Rutger's women basketball team, you're not the first group to be made fun of on the radio, and you won't be the last.

Yeah - I'm not sure how I feel about this yet - I will be sure to post my thoughts once I've formulated them completely.

Times were, we had something called the First Amendment, but ever since the Bush regime took over...
Archimago - ()
oh yeah... I'm scared to go out at night with all the "Bush Stormtroopers" marching through the streets. What the hell does Bush have to do with this? As far as I know it's Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson who are trying to silence Imus.

Times are, we still have a First Amendment. We have the right to say anything we want. We don't have the right to force a radio or TV station to give us the soapbox to stand on. If NBC wants to suspend Imus for something, that is their right. Imus still has the freedom to walk down the street and do his show for passers-by. I think that Sharpton and Jackson would like to see his right to do even that removed, but so far Bush hasn't been involved.

A word about Sharpton and Jackson: They stepped into the void left by Martin Luther King Jr., but they aren't fit to stand in his shadow let alone stand in his place. They use racial tensions to further their own political careers and to line their pockets.

It is an issue of free speech. Imus is an idiot. He has every right to be an idiot. End of story.
David - ()
Actually, it's not really an issue of free speech. As Archie pointed out, nobody has taken away his ability to speak freely. His corporate sponsorship of his free speech is what's in question. This change in corporate sponsorship is reactionary to the cries of the offended. It is the offended I have issue with.

The government is in no way involved. (In this instance. I don't even want to get started on the FCC.)

I still say, if you don't like a radio show, change the dial. Ratings for the show will drop, advertisers will see a drop in the value of their advertising dollars, and capitalism will run it's course. Protest, in this matter, wastes the time and money of everyone involved, and serves only to push the agendas of the protestors.

"I still say, if you don't like a radio show, change the dial."

agreed
Archimago - ()
I like how the "Professional Protesters" quickly called the Duke University Lacrosse team "rapists". The case against the team has since been dropped for lack of evidence. No apology was given to the team from the "Professional Protesters". They were too busy looking for the next march.

Why is "Nappy Headed Ho" worse than "Rapist"?
David - ()
So now MSNBC has dropped their telecast of Imus in the Morning. This is obviously in response to the rapid sponsor withdrawls.

This is a shame. Imus is an intelligent man, and doesn't deserve the shock jock label. I don't agree with all of his opinions, but he at least has interesting ones.
