David: OS X. Where Shall I Buy Thee?
Today I will be purchasing OS X, version 10.5 "Leopard".

Problem is, I'm not sure where I'm going to buy it.

I live fairly close to an Apple Store, and initially this was my choice. Not only will I be surrounded by Mac's and Mac peripherals, but I can also take the opportunity to fiddle with an iPod Touch. Also, there's supposed to be an exclusive t-shirt given away with the first 500 copies each Apple Store sells. I haven't had me an OS X shirt since Jaguar (10.2), back when I was a student member of the ADC.

Then, last night, I got an email from a computer store that is a bit closer to home. They also will begin selling Leopard at 6 pm this evening. They, however, are offering a $40.00 mail in rebate. One thing I'm excited about with Leopard is the Time Machine automatic backup feature, but I need to get a new external hard drive for it. An extra $40.00 could help supplement this purchase, and there will be better deals on hard drives right there at the computer store.

But I won't get the t-shirt, and I won't be in Mactopia.

So, the real question is, am I willing to spend $40.00 (and some extra in travel) for a t-shirt?

I think maybe I am.

go local and take the cash

Buy it local, save the $40.00. Buy another copy at the Mac store, get the T-shirt, then return that copy for store credit or something at a later date.

I saved the $40, and went to the computer store, and picked up a Firewire/USB 2.0 external hard drive to boot.

Just finished the upgrade. Gonna play now!
