I checked it out. The macbook Air has actually caused the entire sector to plummet! If you compare the charts, the computer sector is actually mirroring Apple. It happened around the time of the Macbook Air announcement, so that proves causality! I was so wrong about the Air. Damn that Steve Jobs for trying to innovate. He should just give us the same computers every year.
To be honest, though: I agree that the downturn in the computer sector in general (which the title of my post relates) is what's mainly reflected here. However, had that not happened I still believe AAPL would have dropped down to the $160 - $150 range, maybe a little lower. I think the iPhone honeymoon is coming to an end, and Apple needs to focus (and probably is focusing) on making substantial updates to its already existing line.
I still think the MBA is a ridiculous idea of a computer, whose main purpose is for Apple to be able to say, "Yeah, we have one of those too" when discussing sub-notebooks.
By the way, your tip off that I was just goofing around in the above image should have been the "OMG", "FTW" and "!!!". I tend to use these in mock exuberance.
And then, of course, there's the part of me that just wanted to be a dick because you implied that since your AAPL stock accounted for 40% of your return last year my disagreement with their decisions wasn't valid.
That, and I can't think of anything to get Nate riled up over...
I think you miss the point of the Macbook Air. It isn't supposed to be a huge seller like the iPhone was. It does show the future of the rest of Apple's line. Flash drives, LED Display, Environmental Innards. Apple always rides the line between tech and design. The Cube is a good example. By all standards it was a failure. Fast forward a few years and the Mac Mini was a success. I think the Macbook Air is a transitional product.
As for my return last year, I got out of Apple when The P/E wouldn't justify the price. If I had ridden to the peak, I would have made a lot more. I thought that the price had to relax a bit. I didn't my return to try to invalidate your argument. I had already given reasons why I thought that The Air was a good decision. I mentioned it to give reason why I have more faith in Apple's decisions than in your assessment of them.

You implied it. I don't want to quibble semantics.

I completely agree with this. However, there is a difference between a product being ahead of the market and ahead of its time. Being ahead of your time is inherently bad. This product is ahead of its time (which is why it's priced so highly).
