David: iPhone 3G Just Broke My Heart
Since the announcement of the iPhone 3G, I've been hoping to snag one when they come out.

Turns out, if you're not eligible for an upgrade, you can do an "early upgrade", but the price is $200 more than the announced $199 and $299.

Plus, the plans are locked down to certain restrictions that I'm not down with. We have a family plan, but the family option for iPhone assumes two iPhones.

Maybe at some point in the future I'll add a third iPhone line, but I doubt it.

It's an awesome device. It's too bad Apple has let it be mired down by their partnership with AT&T.

See, the thing is Apple could easily sell the unit unlocked so it could work with any GSM carrier (thats AT&T and T-Mobile in the US), but, since they got greedy with the reveneue sharing with AT&T (no other carrier would allow them to take a chunk out of all subscription cash), they won't. And they have that stupid exclusive thing with AT&T til 2010 or something.

But, I would guess that buying a 3G iPhone outright would be something like $800 or more.

Still...I want one. Maybe I'll just get a iPod touch instead, does most of what I want the iPhone for anyway.

The main reason I wanted an iPhone over an iPod was for on the go web browsing, without having to depend on a WiFi point.

They're going to sell with a no commitment price of $600 and $700 at some point in the future, according to AT&T.
