David: Homosexual Religious Goodness
Quote captpicard
today with many mainstream churches abadoning the Bible in such areas as homosexuality and so on

The main Biblical reference cited to support Christian opposition to homosexuality lies in Leviticus Chapter 8, Verse 22.

Quote The Bible
Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Oh, and let's not forget 20:13

Quote The Bible
If a man has sex with another man, kill them both.

He's such a loving God.

So there it is. The Bible clearly is against homosexuality, and its adherents are entirely entitled to their personal belief.

Some other things that adherent Christians like captpicard believe are:

They don't eat beef - Leviticus 11:3
Or shrimp - Leviticus 11:10-12
They think new moms are dirty - Leviticus 12:2
Bald people are alright - Leviticus 13:40-41
If you get come on you, you're dirty until nightfall - Leviticus 15:16-18
They stay the fuck away from menstruating women - Leviticus 15:19-30
They NEVER wear a linen and wool blend shirt - Leviticus 19:19
Slavery is A-OK for priests - Leviticus 22:11

This is just a short list of things you may not have known that all these Christians against homosexuality also believe. Cool, huh?

Nicely played. One a serious not: the passage of Prop 8 is California makes me very, very sad.
Archimago - ()
The problem with Prop 8 in California is the definition of marriage. We have 2.
the first definition is a religious ceremony, the second is a civil ceremony. The simple solution would be to use the term civil union in all legal matters.
That includes man/man, woman/woman, and man/woman unions.

Allow churches to use the term marriage. If a church wanted to allow gay marriage they could, but other churches would not be required to recognize it as such.

This solution is probably too pragmatic.

Everyone knows the Old Testament isn't supposed to be used anymore. That's why we should follow the New Testement to the letter!

On the subject of gay/lesbian marriage, it is sad that we get hung up over a name. At least it seems that they are finally getting rights through civil unions. Archmagio has a good idea, it's a shame we probably won't see anything close to that in our lifetime.

On another note, why don't we get pissed at Jesus from Mexico?

I didn't realize the Old Testament was obsolete... is it because it's so ridiculously hard to take literally with a straight face? Cuz we could chizzle away at the New Testament too. Just by a show of hands, who hear believes in sea water being a viable walking surface?
David - ()
Now, now. Christianity requires a certain amount of faith, and we should by now means begrudge it's adherants of that. Walking on water is one of the many miracles that Christ was said to perform. Unbelievable as it may be, it's part of the package deal of Christanity.

But it's the selective interpretation that gets me. They will do what "God" says in one verse, and totally disregard "His word" in another.
Nominal - ()
Believing in any of the Bible's miracles hinders advancement in real science. The only way for us to seriously advance is to shake religion altogether and start taking scientific research seriously instead of refuting it with stories of magic.

Say what you will about the sweet miracle of unquestioning faith, I consider a capacity for it terrifying and absolutely vile.
David - ()
Last I checked, nobody was heading over to the local F.A.G. Church for scientific advise.

If people want a little religion it's their business. They just don't need to force it to be mine.

Dude, I don't know you, but you certainly speak my language.

Kurt Vonnegut said that. I'm not a fan of his, but it's a pretty sweet quote.

Outside of that I have as much respect for religious views as Christians show to my Atheist views. I want peace and prosperity and complete freedom for everyone, but we'll never get that if we remain hung up on the Bible's contradictions.
David - ()
Complete freedom for everyone includes the freedom for people to believe fairy tales. As I said, I don't begrudge them that, as long as they keep it to themselves.

Folks, meet Noah, by the way.
Nominal - ()
They don't keep it to themselves I guess would be what I'm getting at.

Nathan Tyree - (Overwhelmed by existential angst)
Nice to meet you, Noah. We need another atheist here.

Hey, thanks for being www.parallaxcity.com's first fan... or viewer anyways. I reflect on your initial words of encouragement often... "I look forward to seeing what develops."
More on topic, I really hate being an Atheist. I hated that whole transition from blind belief to an unanswerable question here or there to complete loss of faith. It's very alienating, and it really shouldn't be. For as important as we preach education to be we, as a society, do a good job of belittling educated thought. I look forward to filling my own kids' heads full of religion and walking them through to the other side.
Since my stepdad's a pastor you could attribute all this to daddy issues, but I like to think I'm just a very good critical thinker.
