David: Luke Skywalker and the fall of the Empire
From the novelization of The Force Awakens...
Kylo Ren, I watched the Galactic Empire rise, and then fall. The gullible prattle on about the triumph of truth and justice, of individualism and free will. As if such things were solid and real instead of simple subjective judgments. The historians have it all wrong. It was neither poor strategy nor arrogance that brought down the Empire. You know too well what did.
Ren nodded once. Sentiment.
Yes. Such a simple thing. Such a foolish error of judgment. A momentary lapse in an otherwise exemplary life. Had Lord Vader not succumbed to emotion at the crucial moment—had the father killed the son—the Empire would have prevailed. And there would be no threat of Skywalker’s return today.

Luke Skywalker was not a hero of the Battle of Endor, and not solely responsible for the fall of the Galactic Empire. I feel like I'm the only sane person in a world of crazy people that somehow remember Luke Skywalker toppling the Empire single handed. <-- NO PUN INTENDED! That shit happened organically. I did just now consider going for an Organa-cally pun, but I'm above it.

Fuck, where was I?

Luke, right. Luke Skywalker was aboard the second Death Star when the Battle of Endor was taking place. He was fighting with his dad while a creepy old man cackled in the background. He ended up kicking his dad's ass, getting his ass kicked by the old man, and then watching his dad throw the old man down a big hole.

None of these things lead to the downfall of the Empire.

The Empire was brought down through the direct efforts of Han Solo and his squad on Endor taking down the Death Star's shield followed up by some elite tier piloting by Lando Calrissian who flew all the way to the center of the station, blew up the core, and flew back out again before it exploded. These are all things that would have happened without Luke's involvement.

I will give credit to two things he did that indirectly lead to the victory. He, along with Leia, stopped two scout troopers from reporting on the shield generator sabotage team. He also stalled for time with the ewoks by floating Threepio around until Leia could come out and save them. Does that make him a Hero of the battle? If so, I guess we should toss some credit Artoo's way as well. Is he a myth?

I need to lie down.

I think he is a myth. It seems, in TFA, that the events of thirty years earlier have become stories, tales, half-believed yarns swapped around in the backrooms and barrooms of the galaxy. Of course Luke is THE hero. That is the thread of conenctivity that makes the stories meaningful. One Skywalker created the empire, another tore it down.

He really didn't though and Snoke has to know that if he knows as much about the father/son duel as that text alludes to. Which begs the question how does he know?
Nathan Tyree - (Overwhelmed by existential angst)
True, he didn't and Snoke should be in a position to know that. I haven't read the book. Could Snoke be using the mythology to steer Ren where he wants him to go? Could he be lying to Ren to help him along in his development?
