I'm all for allowing people to be mentally unstable in harmless ways.

I'm curious if they believe the things they present, or if it is more of a wishful thinking situation.

I view it the same as other socially accepted delusions. We take them at their word.
When a person with a penis and a y-chromosome identifies as a woman, society dictates that we use feminine pronouns and call her Caitlyn. Articles are published explaining that that the y-chromosome isn't determinant of sex.

When a woman claims Native American heritage with no evidence, we take her word for it.
When another woman identifies as black despite her parents both being white, society creates a new term: trans-racial.
Modern western culture dictates that we normalize to the outliers.
Hey, at least their not shooting up churches and malls.
