Nathan Tyree: Marleybone Coach
The new book is going to be called Taking the Marleybone Coach. It is surreal, difficult, dark, sad, funny, ugly, twisted, rotting, stygian, cold and groovy. There is nothing about this story that doesn't hurt. It's about 30,000 words so far and should grow by another 20 k or so... but... I think I can cut it by half when it's done (talk about taking the Marleybone stage, ya know?).

The title might be a little vague, but it has become an obsession. Obsession is all I have.

It only hurts until it doesn't.

Nathan Tyree: One in
One in, One Out

A few days after my father-in-law died this gray cat showed up in our yard begging for food and faking a limp to win our hearts. I couldn't help thinking of Rick in Casablanca. One in, one out, he said and it seemed to fit. It went that way with the cats. When one would die or disappear another would just show up. I'd always repeat the line: one in, one out. After my mom died, while my dad dropped fifteen pounds and three quarters of his reason to live, she just appeared. A scruffy sheltie. She was half terrified, half in love and ate the plastic water dish we gave her. Each piece of leftover steak was snatched and taken eight feet away to be eaten, but it was done with adoring eyes. One in, one out.
