Vent: A blog, of sorts.
Kick names, take ass.
not entirely gruntled

So, I got passed over for a creative director position last year. It was given to a guy that wanted the title more than the job. I was unhappy. I have more years with the company, more management experience, and I have demonstrably done more to shape our creative department than he has. The only thing he beats me at is self aggrandizement.
Our department has gone from seeking to be the most original in the market, to glorifying downloaded presets as"creative solutions".

Now our manager has quit.
If the creative director applies and gets the newly vacated management position, his lack of leadership abilities will become obvious and he will likely fail. As part of the creative department, I will suffer.

If I apply and get the position, I will have the headache of managing a creative department tied to a dying medium: the local television commercial.

I get paid well where I'm at. I get good benefits.
I'm not disgruntled, but I don't feel any joy in the work.
Damn.

There's no shortage of obsequious clowns who get promoted for promotion's sake. I don't know your environment, but if I were a betting man (I'm not) I'd say he's younger, cheaper, and perceived as more malleable than you.

Obviously you need to maintain the 9 to 5 (for now), but you sound like a man who needs a serious creative outlet. Tell the obstacles in your way to fuck off (or work around the ones that this doesn't apply to) and go make something.

Related to this. If you ever feel ready to quit your job, read the book Quitter. It's by a guy that works for Dave Ramsey, but don't let that sway you one way or another.
The author has a different worldview than I, but does a good job of talking you off the ledge.

So now the creative director has quit to pursue his side business.
I don't know what to think or feel anymore.
