Snark?
Archimago at 12-25-2015 10:19 pm
I've been telling my son that unless he creates something himself, he really has no room to critique the creations of others. I used to be snarky. I could tell you how countless movies could be improved. Books that have great ideas, but flawed endings? Countless numbers of them(most by Stephen King).
Video games are the same thing. My son consumes a lot of games, and loves to tell me where they fall short. Should I accept that he is a lot like I was at that age, or should I try to make him look at thing from a more mature perspective?
Maybe I'm getting older, but I don't like hearing how creators fail to meet consumer expectations. I would rather hear about what they got right.

Dream Joke
Archimago at 12-24-2015 3:09 am
You know those dreams where you make a joke and it's really funny, until you wake up? Then you think to yourself, why did I think that was funny?

I had a dream where the joke actually made sense upon waking.

Did you hear about Trumps new imigration plan?
If it's yellow let it mellow. If It's brown, turn it down.

It's not hilarious, but at least it makes comedic sense.

The Room Game review
Archimago at 12-01-2015 6:52 pm
OK, I'm not a gamer-gamer. I'm a casual gamer. The games I enjoy are puzzle games. The Myst series are MY type of game.

I just got my iPad Pro and downloaded a The Room. It's the closest thing to a Myst without being Myst.

Excellent, Excellent, Excellent.

It wasn't a long game, but for 2 bucks it was worth every penny and more.
If you get this, IGNORE the hint icon that keeps popping up. I swear, why would I buy a puzzle, then ask how to solve it? It ceases to be a puzzle at that point.

The story is on the same par with the original Myst (i.e., a weak narrative with plenty of mystery to be filled in during later installments.)

I will be getting the other installments.

American Psycho

I just finished reading the book by Bret Easton Ellis.
Quite possibly the worst book I've ever read.
I understand what Ellis is trying to do, but it is a very difficult read. The characters are two dimensional and Ellis provides little narrative to help the reader.
I can read a book with loose narrative as long as the characters are interesting. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a good example.
I can also enjoy a book with two dimensional characters if there is a strong narrative through line. The Fountainhead would be an example.

Ellis provides glimpses of a yuppie world that never really existed in order tear it apart. The transgressive nature of the book is dulled by the lack of any glimpse of normal society. The repetitive nature makes you feel as though you are reading the same two pages over and over again. I think it could have been brilliant as a short story.

In short: If you want a transgressive look at yuppies and consumerism that you can enjoy, read Fight Club.
