I say no. I'm avoiding the iPhone until it's on a true 3G network. I have a feeling that this is going to happen after the holiday season.

The best money right now is on the iPod Touch. It's got everything you like about the iPhone without the phone. Sure, you won't be able to surf the web in the middle of nowhere, but if you can wait just a little while longer, that will be a much more robust experience later.
