Which is why radio generally is stale. The "alternative" station I (sporadically) listen to in KC has taken to playing a lot of Jack Johnson and Depeche Mode wanna-bees. Just like every other station.

I guess it's better than the market I moved here from. There the advertising dollars went to the country stations. Yeee-haw!

Yeah - I agree with you. I generally don't listen to radio, but I am hopeful that the spirit of radio will prevail and - just maybe - I'll get to throw my two cents in somewhere.

The only hope for radio, IMHO, is services like XM Satelite Radio. Since they're making their money from the listeners directly instead of advertisers (so far), they're less likely to be influenced in the same ways. Whatever is popular is most likely to be played because the people are most likely to want to listen to it. Then the biggest problem becomes what you think is good compared to what the average listener thinks is good. Ultimately, the only way you'll get really out-there stuff on the radio with real regularity is if you could have some form of radio not based on money at all. Though, you'd still have to listen to whatever the guy running it wanted you to.

On an unrelated note, I'm not sure I even know who the Hollie or the Kinks are. Did they do anything well-known that I'm just not thinking of?
