fuzmeister: Breaking Bad

Anyone else watch this show? I normally don't go for television and try to avoid the universal hype machine, but I really dug this. Kate and I started watching it on Nutflix maybe last summer (2012) and watched the entire last season as it aired.

I'm sure that, if you've read anything online this past week, you probably know the series has ended. I'd be interested to hear what others here thought of the finale if they had followed it.

Kate tells me this is a turning point for television and something, something about the death of the great American novel and moving into new mediums and stuff. I understood what she said, but, either way, this was a damn good show regardless of the cultural impact.

Episodic video is certainly evolving as a storytelling mechanism, but I think the death of the novel is quite a ways off. Personally, there's a weird hybridization of all content going on these days that I'm not really sure that I like. Many novels are being written like spec scripts for movie or television series. Movies are being planned as multi sequel affairs.

I'm good with Breaking Bad's ending. The whole series was a hell of a ride.

I estimate that Breaking Bad's finale was 234% better than Dexter's finale.
There is no science behind this estimate. The characters stayed true to what had come before. We were given resolution on all relevant questions. There were no "drama for drama's sake" moments.

I don't think Breaking Bad is a turning point for television. I think streaming content is definitely a turning point.

A lot of people online claimed that the ending was anticlimactic, but I think it provided resolution. The episodes "To'hajiilee" and "Ozymandias" were the climax of the show; the remaining episodes were just falling action.

I have heard that Dexter's finale was pretty bad though. I never got into that show too much, but I'm leery too now. It seemed like the past couple of seasons weren't that great in general.

I do like that Breaking Bad ended while it was ahead on its own terms instead of sticking around forever like a sick dog.
