I'm going to see Rush tonight in Pittsburgh. I accidentally saw the tour's setlist yesterday and was quite sad.

I am alright with them playing the majority of their new album, but it looks like their mid-to-late eighties period is heavily represented as well. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. That era just wasn't my thing - too many synthesizers, man.

At least they'll probably play Tom Sawyer and Working Man. And, hey, if you think I'm overreacting, here's a little reminder of their awesome mid-to-late eighties output.

Seeing Foo Fighters tomorrow in Pittsburgh with my ol' buddy Steve Scott. I'm hoping that Dave Grohl's voice has recovered since he blew it out in Seattle. It should be a good, rockin' show and the opener is a band I've never heard, so I'm excited to hopefully get into some new music along with the experience.

So I am probably going to go see They Might Be Giants with Dave Trinh on November 15th. It's a Thursday night and only 14$. The venue is Mr. Smalls Theatre too... which is bangin'...

Misfit Love - Pittsburgh, 9/28
(Not shot by me)

So last night I saw Queens of the Stone Age for the third time in my life. I never planned on seeing them the past three tours - it just so happened that somehow I did. The last time was really only because they were playing at Lollapalooza 2006 and we were there. This time was because my friend who wanted to see them with me the other two times was finally going to see them.

I had never been to the venue before and, I must say, it wasn't too bad, but it did not suit this band. Seriously, it was a sit-down venue. I will say that this ruined my experience a little bit compared to, say, Bryce Jordan Center in State College, PA where I was rocking out in the front row. Regardless, the band sounded pretty good - better than Lollapalooza and maybe worse than at Bryce Jordan. I really think Josh Homme's vocals could've been higher in the mix - of course, this could have been the crummy seats we had too. The lighting was a real treat and the left/right/top strobes they had alternating were sick.

Something about this band, to me, just isn't the same since Nick Oliveri's departure in 2004. Joey Castillo is a freakin' awesome drummer and Troy can play some amazing riffs, but the two other guys they've got on this tour aren't anything out of this world. You can hardly even compare their current bassist to their past bass player, in my opinion. Homme sounded really good on pretty much every song with the exception of being able to hear the vocals as well as I would've liked.

The most disappointing part of the night was when they came out and tore through Song for the Dead for the encore and then... nothing else. Surely, I thought, they would play No One Knows as they had before for the last song. Nope - just one song. And while it was awesome, the encore wasn't quite enough. I might have had something to do with Josh saying earlier that no one told them the venue had seats and, while everyone there was very nice to them, they would "never play this venue again."

Some stand out moments during the show included the audience sing-along to Make It Wit Chu which Josh commented afterwards that we were "all getting laid tonight." He also dedicated Little Sister to all the "little sisters" that came to see Hanson play at the venue the night before.

Here's a rough set-list... I don't think the order is perfect:
  • Burn the Witch
  • Misfit Love
  • Leg of Lamb
  • Into the Hollow
  • Battery Acid
  • Little Sister
  • Sick Sick Sick
  • Go With the Flow
  • 3's and 7's
  • Make It Wit Chu
  • Do It Again
  • In the Fade
  • Turnin' on the Screw
  • You Would Know
  • Avon
  • I Think I Lost My Headache

  • Song for the Dead

Mood: Sleepy

Alrighty-roo - first of all, it's snowing in Johnstown and it's bloody cold already. I think I've caught a cold as the result of the sudden temperature change. I'm banking on our heat not working since I wired the new thermostat myself. Fortunately it's only in the mid-60s in our apartment. Go away though, Snow. Please.

Secondly, I never fully got to shell out my experience with Kate last week in Pittsburgh. Wednesday we went up to the city to see Carbon Leaf play at the Rex Theatre. Great show - although the setlist was a bit lacking on older material. Understable though since they just released a new LP and, commercially, the newer stuff has been more successful. I guess that's the kind of thing that happens when you sign to a major label. I went to Starbucks tonight and saw the new Carbon Leaf LP was on sale there (this is in Johnstown, mind you). Jeez, I thought, is this success or failure to be marketed through corporate America. Greater exposure, yes - stiffled creativity though, maybe. That's a different rant for a different day.

Speaking of Starbucks...

That Was A Good Moment.

... I got to meet Terry Clark of Carbon Leaf after Kate saw him leaving a Starbucks where I was peeing. He was very friendly and we got to chat with him for a couple of minutes about touring, the new record, and how I first heard of them (thanks again, Brandon). Regardless, good times were had and I suppose that it's the first time I ever got to meet a musician I truly respect and have respected for quite some time.
